I've been wanting raised vegetable beds for a while now. I have a pretty decent sized yard and I've tried a few pots and planters here and there, but I also have a ginormous Chinese elm tree that shades most of the yard so those plants didn't do so well. There's only one spot that gets enough sun during the day and it was occupied by part of our decomposed granite patio. So raised beds is what we went for. I'm pretty stoked with them. We've been working with them for a couple weeks now and have planted tomatoes, squash, zucchini, green beans, lettuce, spinach, garlic, carrots, basil, cilantro, chives and sweet onions. (We have serrano peppers, lemon and lime trees, as well as plum and avocado.) After watching my dog run through them, my cat use them as a litter box and my 2 year old dig into the freshly planted seeds, we decided to put up the fence. I still need to build the trellises for some tomatoes and green beans but that's about it as far as I know. I'll post new photos once the beds fill in some more. I can't wait!
